How to Read Nutrition Labels

Compare foods on a consistent basis. Read a concrete example, examine the trade-offs, and try a small exercise to see whether the principle applies to your situation.

The important basics

  • Start here. Check serving size before comparing calories or nutrients.
  • Add context. Compare sodium, added sugar, and fiber where relevant.
  • Keep in mind. Percent daily values are reference guides, not personalized prescriptions.

An everyday situation

A cereal label might list 180 calories per serving but contain three servings. Eating the full package would provide about 540 calories, assuming the label values and serving sizes apply as stated.

BlogJD editorial perspective

Serving size is the most important first number because every other label value depends on it.

Warning signs and limits

Nutrition labeling rules and rounding conventions differ by jurisdiction. A marketing claim such as “natural” does not replace the ingredient list or nutrient table.

Make a safer plan

Compare two products using the same portion size. Check calories, key nutrients and ingredients relevant to your needs, not just the front-of-pack slogan.
