Create a Home Inventory

Document belongings before you need the record. Read a concrete example, examine the trade-offs, and try a small exercise to see whether the principle applies to your situation.

What to check first

  • Start here. Photograph valuable items and capture serial numbers when available.
  • Add context. Keep proof of purchase in secure backup storage.
  • Keep in mind. Update the list after major purchases or moves.

An everyday situation

A photo of a laptop alone may not prove which model was owned. A useful inventory entry includes the item, purchase date, model or serial number where appropriate, approximate replacement value and a photo of the item in its ordinary setting.

BlogJD editorial perspective

A small verified inventory updated every few months is more useful than a huge undocumented list assembled only after an emergency.

Exceptions and local rules

Serial numbers, receipts and photographs may contain sensitive information. Store backups securely and consider what an insurer actually requires in your jurisdiction.

Make a useful change

Inventory one room today. Create a consistent filename for each item and save a backup in a second location.
